As the digital world has grown over the years, many industries have adapted and changed. Specifically in construction, many software and applications have been created to make the industries process much faster and more efficient. This post will go over some of these programs and how they are used.

Procore

Procore is an online tool consturction managers can use for many project management applications. It allows for easier collaboration between all players on a construction project, being the contractors, subcontractors, architects, engineers, and owners.

Typically this program is used for documentation upload and viewing for all involved parties. This includes aspects such as submittals, requests for information, project plans, specifications, and general documents.

All involved parties can be added to a specific project on the program so they can access all shared documents. It sends out email notifications for any action items needed and who is responsible for them. Anyone added can be given specific permissions so certain documents can remain unseen if they are specific to a certain company or confidential.

Overall this program makes collaboration much more efficient and allows for easy construction document viewing and reviewing.

Revit

Revit is a paid program mostly used for modeling in construction. There are many uses of this program including model viewing, estimating, model creation, and equipment schedules.

While there are other modeling programs available, architects can use this software or export models to the revit file type, where they can be reviewed and analyzed. This is also a great modeling tool for engineers who want to incorporate HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems into their models to show how they can be incorporated into the architect’s work.

From an estimating standpoint, this software can be used to takeoff quantities on any materials that are incorporated within the model. This is useful for material and equipment pricing estimates, however is not typically recommended as it can be unreliable.

Navisworks

This is another paid software relating to modeling, also created by Autodesk, but has different applications than Revit does. While Revit is more general, Navisworks can mainly be used for BIM coordination.

BIM coordination involves subcontractors such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection subcontractors to collaborate and detect any clash issues in their work. Using Navisworks, these subs can work together to make sure their systems aren’t interfering with each other and can be realistic constructed, and to notice what needs to be changed and applied during the actual construction.

Conclusion

There are many new digital programs used in the construction industry for many different applications. Procore, Revit, and Navisworks are just a few of many of these useful programs and software which helps make the industry for efficient and successful.
